Estimate how much DE to add back after backwashing.
This calculator estimates how much diatomaceous earth to add after backwashing a DE filter. Enter the manufacturer’s full-charge amount and choose the percentage you want to replace after backwashing.
Backwashing usually removes most, but not always all, of the DE coating from the grids. That is why many pool owners recharge with less than the full clean-start amount.
DE powder coats the filter grids and creates the fine filtration layer that captures small particles. Running a DE filter without enough powder can leave the fabric exposed and allow debris to embed directly into the grids.
Too much DE can also create high pressure and poor flow, so the recharge amount should follow the filter manufacturer’s guidance whenever possible.
Many systems use about 70–80% of the full charge after backwashing, but the filter label or manual should take priority.
You can use cups as a rough estimate, but DE density varies. Weight is more accurate.
The grids may not be fully coated, which can reduce filtration and allow debris to become embedded in the fabric.
Excess DE can raise pressure, reduce flow, and overload the filter.
Write the full-charge weight on the filter tank. That saves hunting for the manual every time the filter is cleaned.
