Safety: Never mix chlorine products. Add chemicals to water (not water to chemicals). Follow label directions and local codes.

How to Open a Swimming Pool in Spring

A good spring opening is easier when the work is done in the right order. Restore circulation first, remove debris second, and adjust water chemistry only after the equipment is running properly. This prevents wasted chemicals and makes it easier to spot leaks or equipment problems early.

Start With the Cover and Equipment

Remove standing water and debris from the cover before taking it off. Reinstall drain plugs, return fittings, skimmer parts, pump components, filter parts, and salt-system equipment. Inspect O-rings and unions before starting the pump.

Restore Circulation

Clean Before Heavy Chemical Treatment

Brush the walls, steps, ladders, and floor. Remove leaves and sediment with a net or vacuum. Physical cleaning reduces the amount of contamination chlorine must handle and helps the filter clear the water faster.

Test and Balance the Water

Once circulation is stable, test Free Chlorine, Combined Chlorine, pH, Total Alkalinity, Calcium Hardness, and CYA. Correct pH and alkalinity first, then adjust stabilizer and calcium as needed before bringing chlorine to the proper target.

Inspect Safety Equipment

Before the pool is used, inspect barriers, gates, alarms, drain covers, handrails, ladders, and electrical equipment. Replace damaged or missing safety items before allowing swimmers into the pool.

Important Notes
  • Never mix chlorine products with acids or other chemicals.
  • Confirm all winter plugs are removed before running the system.
  • Do not add large chemical doses until circulation is working correctly.
  • Record the clean filter pressure so future pressure increases are easy to spot.
